A scanner is a device that optically converts images, printed text, handwriting, or an object into a digital file.
The most common type of scanner used in the home and office is the flatbed scanner, where the document is placed on a glass support.
A scanner may have a sheet feeder as an accessory, so that it moves the page to be scanned to the sensor using a series of rollers. The feeder can be used to scan one page or multiple pages.
A handheld scanner is a portable version of an image scanner that can be used on any flat surface.
Modern scanners typically use a charge-coupled device (CCD) or contact image sensor (CIS) as the image sensor, while drum scanners, developed earlier and still used to obtain the highest possible image quality, use a photomultiplier tube (PMT) as the image sensor. Document cameras, which use specialized or consumer-grade high-resolution cameras, photograph all documents at once.
