Types of Fibre Optic Connectors and Adapters
At Electrónica Embajadores, you will find a specialised selection of fibre optic connectors and fibre optic adapters for professional installations and high-performance projects. This range includes single-mode and multi-mode solutions, simplex and duplex configurations, and PC, UPC and APC polish finishes, covering deployments from FTTH and GPON to data centres, LAN and optical backbones. We use high-precision ceramic ferrules and durable housings, ensuring low insertion loss, high return loss, and long-term reliability.
The category includes the most widely used formats: SC, LC, ST and FC, with simplex (one fibre) and duplex (two fibres) variants, as well as couplers and adapters SC-SC, LC-LC and hybrids. For quick visual identification, colours follow the standard convention: green for APC single-mode, blue for UPC single-mode, and beige/aqua for multi-mode (OM1–OM4).
Choosing correctly between single-mode (SM 9/125) and multi-mode (OM1 62.5/125, OM2 50/125, OM3 50/125, OM4 50/125) is critical for achieving distance and bandwidth objectives. In single-mode, SC/APC and LC/APC connectors provide high return loss thanks to the 8° angled polish, reducing back-reflection in sensitive links (such as RF-over-fibre and WDM). In multi-mode, PC/UPC polish and SC/PC, LC/PC connectors are common for short to medium runs with high port density.
Polish type directly affects performance: PC (Physical Contact) is the classic standard with low insertion loss; UPC (Ultra Physical Contact) improves return loss with a finer finish (usually blue for single-mode); and APC (Angled Physical Contact) tilts the ferrule 8° to minimise reflections, identified by green. For minimal interference and optimal signal-to-noise ratio over long distances, APC is recommended, while UPC is common for transceivers requiring very low reflections.
