A variable capacitor is a component whose capacity can be varied mechanically or electronically.
They are capacitors provided with a mechanism that have an adjustable capacity between different values to choose from, or they have a variable capacity within large limits.
The first are called trimmers and the second synchronization capacitors, and they were widely used in analog radio and TV receivers, to equalize the impedance in the antenna tuners and set the resonance frequency to tune the radio or television station.
