An Electrolytic Cell is one that requires electrical energy for the chemical reaction to take place and therefore, they are non-spontaneous in nature.
What is an electrolytic cell?
An electrolytic cell is a device used for the decomposition of ionized substances called electrolytes by electric current.
The decomposition process carried out in the electrolytic cell is called electrolysis.
What are the phases of electrolysis?
Ionization. It is the previous phase before the application of electric current to the substance to be decomposed. This process is achieved by melting or dissolving it.
Orientation: Once the electric current is applied, the ions are directed depending on their electrical charge towards the corresponding positive or negative pole.
Discharge: Anions or negative ions give up electrons to the anode (positive) and positive ions or cations take electrons from the catode (negative).
To increase the ion mobility
Electrolysis is carried out in solution or in salts to increase the ion mobility.
