The 4N46 is a 6-pin, 1-channel, high-gain Darlington output optocoupler containing a GaAsP light emitting diode optically coupled to a high-gain photodetector IC. Excellent temperature performance results from the inclusion of a built-in emitter base shunt resistor that shunts the photodiode and first stage leakage currents as well as purging excess base unit to ground. External access to the second stage base provides better noise rejection capability than a conventional photodarlington detector. An external resistor or capacitor can be added at the base to make input current threshold adjustment or gain bandwidth. The base wire can also be used for feedback. The high current transfer ratio at very low input currents allows circuit designs in which adequate margin can be left for the effects of optical coupling variations. It has a minimum CTR of 350% at an input current of just 0.5 mA, making it ideal for use in low input current applications such as CMO
