DC-DC converters are electronic devices capable of transforming one voltage level to a higher or lower level.

There are two main types of DC-DC converters or regulators: linear and switching.

Linear regulators, such as the well-known LM7805 or LM317, are easy to use but are not energy efficient.
In contrast, switching regulators offer energy efficiency levels greater than 80%. Switching converters transform voltage by periodically storing input energy and then releasing it at the output to obtain the desired voltage level. These converters are designed with components that minimize power losses, meaning they do not absorb any energy. Key components are switches, which are current interrupters that ideally have no losses during switching (usually MOSFET transistors), and storage components, such as inductors and capacitors, which temporarily store energy and return it to the circuit. Switching DC-DC converters can be classified according to their output voltage as follows:
- Step-Down (Buck)
- Step-Up (Boost)
- Step-Up-Down (Buck-Boost).

This DC-DC converter with LM2596 is a step-down switching regulator (Step-Down or Buck) that offers high conversion efficiency, excellent line regulation, and low ripple voltage.

This module has been designed to minimize the use of external components and simplify the design of power supplies. It allows you to obtain a regulated voltage from a higher voltage source or battery, such as obtaining 5V, 3.3V, or 1.8V from a 12V source.

To ensure optimal operation, the input voltage must be at least 1.5V higher than the output voltage, otherwise efficiency and performance issues may occur.

This module can handle loads up to 3A, although it is recommended to add a heat sink when used with currents above 2A to ensure proper performance, and it can withstand peaks of 5A.
