SGS (Società Generale Semiconductuttori) was the first Italian semiconductor manufacturing company.
It was created in 1957 by Olivetti and Telettra.
In 1972, the Italian government merged SGS with the also Italian company ATES (Aziende Tecniche Elettroniche del Sud) under the control of the public company STET (Società Finanziara Telefonica). The resulting company took the name of SGS-ATES, until 1985 when the name was changed to SGS Microelettronica.
In 1987 it merged with Thomson Semiconducteurs (except for the military technology part), and was renamed to SGS-Thomson Microelectronics, and later STMicroelectronics.
