STMicroelectronics is a French-Italian company headquartered in Plan-les-Ouates, Switzerland.
STMicroelectronics was formed from the 1987 merger of French Thomson Semiconducteurs (with the exception of the military technology part) and the Italian SGS Microelettronica, under the name SGS-Thomson Microelectronics. Later in 1988 it changed its name to STMicroelectronics.
STMicroelectronics develops and manufactures semiconductors, jet printer heads, MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems), MPEG encoders and chips of smart cards, computer peripherals and chips for wireless and mobile applications.
