Faced with the automotive industry's increasing demands for increased component robustness, KYOCERA AVX recognized the need to produce an MLCC with greater mechanical strength.
It was observed that many components can be subject to severe flexing and vibration when used in various automotive applications and other harsh environments.
To meet this requirement, KYOCERA AVX had to find a way to ensure electrical integrity while external forces are applied to the component. It was discovered that the termination structure needed to be flexible, and after extensive research and development, KYOCERA AVX launched FLEXITERM®.
FLEXITERM® is designed to improve the mechanical flex and temperature cycling performance of a standard ceramic capacitor. The industry standard for flex is a minimum of 2 mm. With FLEXITERM®, KYOCERA AVX provides up to 5 mm of flex without internal cracks. Beyond 5 mm, the capacitor will typically fail in the open state.
In addition to automotive applications, FLEXITERM® will provide engineers with a satisfactory solution when designing PCBs that may be subject to high levels of board flex.
